NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION
Topic A: NATO's response to the Russian Intervention in Crimea
Topic B: Safeguarding the Baltic Region in Response to the Rising Russian Threat
The North Atlantic Treaty was signed on April 4th 1959, being an agreement of mutual defense to counter the growing Soviet threat. This was rectified on the Washington Treaty by 12 countries. However, membership is encouraged to “any other European state in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic Area”. With this statement in mind, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is now formed by 28 countries, which seek the peaceful resolution for conflicts, but are also prepared for a swift military response to crisis situations. NATO also encourages its members to cooperate in order to build trust between them and prevent conflicts, thus creating a strong alliance of collective defense.
